And it sparks a fiery bidding war in the dealers' room! One of his customers had given seller Ole this unassuming bottle of liquor – unaware of the treasure it contained! It's a Chinese Kweichow Moutai, also known as Maotai. The liquor, made from millet and wheat, comes from Guizhou Province in the southwest of the country. Its production is elaborate: one important step is the several-year maturation process in a clay vessel. A few years earlier, US President Richard Nixon had visited Chinese leader Mao Zedong in the Far East. The two had drunk Moutai, thus making the liquor the national drink. Since Mao Zedong died in 1976, this Moutai has a special significance. The bottle was never opened, yet the wax seal on the stopper has cracked over the years due to the alcohol it contains. Expert Detlev estimates its value at 3,000 to 4,000 euros. In the dealers' room, this sip of history leaves everyone speechless – but who will pop the cork?
