I'll try to cover the basics of water lily care. Water lily care - proper placement of water lilies in a pond: After planting a water lily, never lower it to its maximum depth; young plants are fragile and need warm water and plenty of light! I try to plant young water lilies at a depth of no more than 20-30 cm (from the top of the pot to the water surface). Many people make the mistake of immediately planting the plant at the maximum depth. The water lily is unlikely to die, but it will develop very slowly (expending a lot of energy to reach the water surface), and, consequently, you won't see flowers in the first year. It's best to plant water lilies gradually; in the first year, I generally try not to plant them too deeply. For medium and large varieties, about 30-40 cm from the rhizome to the water surface is sufficient (I move them to this depth about a month after planting; this, of course, depends on how warm the summer is and how quickly the water lilies develop). Water Lily Care - When to Repot If you purchased a water lily planted in a container, you need to evaluate the suitability of the container for the water lily. If it's a small pot (1-5 liters), I recommend immediately transplanting the water lily (using the transshipment method) into a larger container, adding the required amount of fertilizer. This method doesn't harm the water lily and won't stunt its development, as it doesn't incur any damage. Basically, you carefully remove the developed (rooted) plant from the pot, along with the soil ball, and move it to another, larger container! If you were sold a mature plant in a fairly large container, you can leave it for 1-2 years without any concerns. Many people make the mistake of leaving the plant in a pond for 2 or more years (in a purchased container) without monitoring the development of the water lily's rhizome. This can cause the water lily to outgrow the container or bury itself, resting against the edge of the container. Not receiving sufficient nutrition, it begins to wither (leaves and flowers become smaller, and flowering becomes less abundant). I recommend monitoring your water lilies annually. Once the rhizome reaches the edge of the pot, either transplant it into a larger container or divide it into several and replant them in different containers.
