Around Guanabara Bay, one of the state's symbols, there are several cities with diverse industries and commerce. On the other side, Niterói, with one of the highest Human Development Indexes (HDI) in Brazil. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), designed by the acclaimed architect Oscar Niemeyer, is a major attraction of the municipality.
