Montessori Math Activities | Sandpaper Numerals for Numbers 0–9

Canvas Numbers (DIY Montessori variation of “Sandpaper Numbers”) Age: 2.5 to 4 years old The Sandpaper Numbers are an essential Montessori mathematics material that introduce numerals 0 – 9 to children. The actual Montessori Sandpaper Numbers are maximises the tacticle sense inviting the child to touch and feel the texture. The material is comprised of 10 green boards, each displaying a number on the front from 0 – 9, cut out of sandpaper. It usually presented in a Three-period lesson to children. Direct aim The direct aim of the Sandpaper Numbers is to teach children the figures that represent each number, allowing them to visually identify any number from 0 – 9. In Montessori education, this is a prerequisite before children are taught how to write numbers and how to count from 0 – 9. This lesson promotes mastery in terms of number recognition rather than having children focus on rote counting or rote memorisation. Indirect aim Because of the tactile feel of the number cards, the material also prepares children for the writing of numerals.
