Les victimes ont avant tout besoin que justice soit rendue - Dialogue avec Laurence Devillairs

It's not uncommon for victims (of violence, abuse, harassment, etc.) to be told they should "forgive," "move on," or "put things into perspective." These seemingly innocent pieces of advice, often given with good intentions, actually deprive the victim of their power. What path is there for the wronged party who refuses to forgive, or to succumb to hatred? Laurence's book: https://www.editions-stock.fr/livre/v... My website: https://www.fabricemidal.com Reso, my meditation school: https://www.reso.co Directed, filmed, and sound recorded by: Alexandre Agostini Edited by: Constance Haond Keywords: "I don't forgive. It's not an inability, but a choice." Some injustices are irreparable, their violence unforgivable. They provoke anger, even a desire for revenge. But no one dares admit it, because revenge is taboo: wisdom rejects it, the state punishes it, morality condemns it. Yet such a desire might be the only way to reclaim the honor of being oneself after being humiliated. Doesn't this aspiration have the power to denounce impunity, to turn shame back on the offender? Neither hatred, nor forgiveness, nor the law of retaliation, wanting revenge for an injustice is an act of liberation. In this essay, as radical as it is rigorous, Laurence Devillairs explores the desire for revenge, drawing on testimonies, classic and contemporary works, and recent cases and trials. She thus challenges the dominant discourses that value forgiveness and reparation at the expense of righteous anger and the fight against abuses of power. Finally placing victims at the center of our concerns may require acknowledging their refusal to forgive. Laurence Devillairs is a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, a qualified teacher, and holds a doctorate and the habilitation to supervise research in philosophy. She recently published Être quelqu’un de bien. Philosophie du bien et du mal (Points, 2024) and La Splendeur du monde. Pourquoi nous ne savent plus voir (Points, 2025).
