Lecture 2c: What is a Scientific Theory?
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the channel. In this lecture, we break down our third—and arguably most misunderstood—scientific term: the Theory. This concept is absolutely essential to clarify now because soon enough, I will be discussing the Big Bang Theory on this channel, which acts as the absolute foundation of modern Cosmology. If you don't understand what a theory means in science, you cannot claim to understand cosmology. In common speech, people use the word “theory” to mean a guess, a hunch, or random speculation. You will often hear people say, “Oh, it’s just a theory.” But in science, when we call something a theory, we’re not guessing. A scientific theory is the absolute highest, most tested, most refined, and most trusted level of understanding possible for some aspect of the universe. It is a massive framework that combines several principles and laws, using them to make a vast array of predictions that are subsequently verified. A theory never becomes a law when it's proven; they are entirely different tools. To illustrate this, we look back at the limitations of Newton's laws we discussed in our last episode. Albert Einstein was the one who would give us a better understanding of how things behave when they are moving much, much faster than a running horse—at speeds approaching the speed of light. His solution wasn't called a law; it is the Special “Theory” of Relativity. Calling an idea a theory is not an insult; it is the highest honor any concept can achieve in science. About Me: My name is Muaz, and I am a graduate Astrophysics student at LMU Munich (The University of Munich) in Germany. My current research and master's thesis specialize in the Hubble Tension, one of the most active observational crises in modern cosmology today. What You Will Learn in This Video: 1. What is a Scientific Theory? 2. Debunking the "It's Just a Theory" Fallacy. 3. The True Hierarchy: Why a Theory is higher than a Law. 4. From Newton to Einstein: Introducing the Special Theory of Relativity. 5. Why the Big Bang Theory is the gold standard of modern cosmology. If you found this lecture valuable, please consider subscribing to follow our complete cosmology journey step-by-step. Share this video with students, teachers, or space enthusiasts who want to learn how the machinery of science truly functions. Thank you for watching, and I will see you next Saturday at 6:00 PM PKT (3:00 PM Munich time) as we tackle our final major term: the Scientific Model, and see how we actively put our grandest theories to the test! #ScientificTheory #PhilosophyOfScience #Physics #Astrophysics #LMUMunich #TheIntelligibleUniverse #Cosmology #Einstein #Relativity #BigBangTheory #HubbleTension
