I FINALLY played Final Fantasy IX for the first time, over 25 years after its initial release—and I have finally atoned by finishing the game. Final Fantasy 9 served as the ultimate PS1 swan song for SquareSoft. Following the futuristic, gritty settings of FF VII and FF VIII, FF IX was a beautiful, charming return to the franchise's classic fantasy roots. From its masterfully crafted prologue and theater troupe kidnapping plot to its deeply emotional and dark themes, this game is an absolute JRPG masterpiece that completely holds up today. In this longform retrospective review, we are diving deep into everything that makes FFIX so freaking special: the brilliant synergy of the main cast, the tactical depth of the Active Time Battle (ATB) and equipment ability systems, the wonderful dungeon designs, Nobuo Uematsu’s legendary soundtrack, and yes... that incredibly whacky, out-of-nowhere final boss battle.
