LEONARDO BOFF: IS LIBERATION THEOLOGY ALIVE? - 20 Minutes Interview Theologian Leonardo Boff stated on the 20 MINUTES INTERVIEW program with Breno Altman this Friday (June 10th) that Pope Francis keeps Liberation Theology alive and that the social movement, of which he is a leading figure, represents the future of the Catholic Church. “Pope Francis will create a new genealogy of popes who come from the peripheries of the world. We are the majority, 24% of Catholics are in Europe and 62% in Latin America,” he argued. “We have a majority and we can demand a pope who represents a living church, no longer colonial like the European one.” For Boff, the model of religion created in the rich world is decadent, “as decadent as all of Europe and the West, and along with it goes that type of imperial church, which assumes power as its center.” In 1984, subjected to a trial by the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (formerly the Holy Office), the religious figure was condemned to so-called obsequious silence and deposed from all his religious functions. Boff's book, Church - Charisma and Power (1981), and the influence of Marxist concepts on his thought and Liberation Theology were at the root of the persecution carried out by the most conservative core of the Catholic Church. In 1992, faced with a new threat of punishment from the Vatican, the religious figure resigned from his priestly duties. Boff advocates breaking with old Catholic taboos and dogmas imposed from above, always based on the principle that the church has a duty to be close to the people, and not isolated: “The church must understand itself as a body within society among other groups and organizations. That it has its dogmas is fine. What it cannot do is impose its vision on everyone. It has to compromise with others.” Consequently, Catholicism should not interfere in matters of individual freedom, "as long as it does not imply oppression of others."
