Yellowing of Leaves of Sugarcane ratoon crop || Crop Reformer
Yellowing of leaves in sugarcane ratoon crop is a common issue that many farmers face, especially after harvesting the main crop. This problem can significantly reduce growth, tillering, and ultimately yield if not managed properly. In this video, we will discuss the major causes behind leaf yellowing in ratoon sugarcane and how farmers can effectively tackle this issue to ensure a healthy crop. One of the main reasons for yellowing is nutrient deficiency, particularly nitrogen deficiency. After harvesting the plant crop, the soil often becomes depleted of essential nutrients, and if proper fertilization is not done in time, the ratoon crop starts showing symptoms like pale green to yellow leaves. Along with nitrogen, deficiencies of magnesium and iron can also contribute to this problem, especially in alkaline soils commonly found in many regions. Another important factor is poor root health and soil compaction. During harvesting, heavy machinery or repeated field operations can compact the soil, restricting root growth and nutrient uptake. Weak or damaged roots fail to absorb water and nutrients efficiently, which results in yellowing and stunted growth. Proper soil aeration and light hoeing can help improve root activity in ratoon crops. Water management also plays a critical role in preventing leaf yellowing. Both over-irrigation and water stress can lead to this issue. Excess water can cause root rot and nutrient leaching, while insufficient water reduces nutrient uptake. Maintaining a balanced irrigation schedule according to weather conditions is essential for keeping the crop healthy and green. Lastly, pest and disease attacks such as root rot, borers, or fungal infections can also lead to yellowing leaves in ratoon sugarcane. Regular field scouting and timely application of recommended pesticides or fungicides can help control these problems. By focusing on balanced nutrition, proper irrigation, and good field management practices, farmers can successfully overcome leaf yellowing and achieve better yields from their ratoon crop.
