In Berlin, the Radziwill Palace is in jubilation. It celebrates the end of the four-month "Conference on Africa." Four months during which the greatest Western diplomats decided Africa's future, divided it into zones of influence, and arbitrarily drew borders. And yet not a single African was consulted! A prey to European geopolitics, Africa, still almost entirely uncharted territory, arouses all sorts of covetousness. Notably that of Leopold II, the King of the Belgians, who, thanks to skillful lobbying during the Conference, managed to reclaim the immense Congo for his kingdom (and soon for his own personal use). Around the table, the theater of power vies with the human comedy: everyone adorns themselves with altruistic virtues, evokes the civilizing mission of the white man, or wraps themselves in fine sentiments. But the facts remain, stubborn, and today's Africa still bears the scars.
