Jhelum is one of the oldest cities in the subcontinent. Like its namesake river, it has seen centuries and witnessed history. Areas around Jhelum are ancient with a history dating back thousands of years. Tilla Jogian was a seat of the jogis where kings, rajas and saints came to pay tribute to these jogis. Jhelum was also the place where mighty Raja Porus once ruled. He fought with Alexander in Battle of Hydespas which is known as a battle of Punjabi resistance. Nandana was also situated in Jhelum district which remained capital of Hindu Shahis. It was also the place where Al Beiruni marked the circumference of the earth. Nandana also saw a battle between forces of Mehmud Ghaznavi and Bhimapal, known as Battle of Nandana. Later, Jhelum passed hands between Ghoris, Khokhars, Sultans of Delhi and Mughals. Sher Shah Suri built the mighty Rohtas Fort nearby which still stands today as a symbol of military significance of this area. Sikhs also built a fort in the city but nothing could tower the mightiness of Rohtas Fort. Rohtas Fort also saw Battle of Rohtas in 1779 between Sikh and Afghan forces. After Punjab’s takeover, the British Raj decided to establish a Cantonment here in Jhelum. It changed the city forever. in 1857, again a battle of resistance was fought in Jhelum when troops of Bengal Native Infantry revolted and fierce fight took place known as Battle of Jhelum 1857. This city is also known as the city of soldiers. It has produced many literates, politicians and writers.
