Replacing the trigger guard assembly on a very old H&R 410 shotgun
READ follow-up at end of description! In this video, I am replacing a broken trigger guard/trigger housing assembly as well as the trigger itself in a century-old Harrington and Richardson (H&R) single shot .410 bore shotgun. I believe it is a model 1900, though it has no model number on it anywhere. It does have “1928” scratched under the buttplate, which I’m assuming is the year of manufacture. I did this because I thought a crack in the trigger guard assembly was allowing the trigger itself to slide back slightly, thus barely engaging the trigger spring. It still worked, but the trigger pull was extremely light and took no real deliberate effort to make it fire. Replacing the trigger guard with one that wasn’t split makes this a very useful shotgun again. It’s not worth much money, but my grandpa hunted squirrels with it, so it’s more rewarding to take a squirrel with grandpa’s old gun than with my modern options. For reference, I believe the same general design is included in the models 1900, 1905, 1908 and possibly others, but if you’re ordering parts watch for large or small frame. The .410 has an action just 1” thick, others are 1.25” thick, and those parts do not interchange. https://www.ewardwinning94.wordpress.com FOLLOW UP - this information is valid for replacing the trigger guard and assembly, but turns out that wasn't the whole reason for a hair trigger. I found the top of the trigger was worn down and had become blunt, so it was not engaging the sear on the hammer well. So a few strokes of a file on the front of the top of the trigger restored it to a sharp point that positively engages the sear now. MUCH better. There is now a clean "click" when you pull the trigger. Still light, but safe. It's now taken its first squirrel since the repair.
