Nenun Widya presents "The emergence of the commercial compound typology for revisiting the role of architect". Triggered by Covid Pandemic, commercial compound searched for new model and bold iconic apporach in the outdoor as an uncontained space. The emergence of popular and successful commercial compound such as Pantjoran PIK area, Postbloc, M-Block and the revitalised Sarinah is the epitome of the capitalisation of outdoor space through place making. At the same time, this project set up a new arena of an alternative not just a design strategy but a business model. In this conversation, Nenun Widya talks would like to set the emergence of the commercial compound typology for revising the role of architect. To what extend the role of architect is critical in such project? What is the dominant factor that makes the project successful? The business model or the design? Should architect redefine its role in such project? Jacobus Gatot Surarjo is the principle of Arcadia Architects. He is profoundly active in various creative industry innitiatives. Some projects he initiated are UMA Seminyak Retails and Creative Space, Seminyak Design Week annual wvent, and the M-Bloc Project. Helen Agustine Rusli is principal and founder of Seniman Ruang, an award winning architectural and interior design practive based in Indonesia with aim to combine architecture and art as one spatial design unity. She has won many competitions and design awards for her projects, including AOM Dining Club, Talaga Sampireun, and Kisaku Coffee Jakarta. Moderator : David Hutama.
