Triumph and Tragedy: Building the Welland Ship Canal
Presented on October 20, 2021 by Kathleen Powell for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum. Kathleen Powell is the Supervisor of Historical Services and Curator for the City of St. Catharines overseeing the St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre, the Morningstar Mill and the Lakeside Park Carousel. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Brock University and the Certificate in Museum Studies through the Ontario Museum Association. Kathleen is a lifelong resident of Niagara and lives in Niagara Falls. Her presentation, “Triumph and Tragedy: Building the Welland Ship Canal”, explores the amazing engineering marvel that is the Welland Canal and the extreme tragedy of 138 men who lost their lives during the construction of this mega-project.
