On March 31, 1986, Mexicana de Aviación Flight 940, a Boeing 727 with 167 people on board, took off from Mexico City International Airport en route to Los Angeles, with stops in Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán. What seemed like a routine flight turned into the worst aviation tragedy in Mexican history. Just minutes into the flight, a fire in the rear section caused by an overheated wheel caused fatal structural damage. The fire melted the fuselage, destroyed the controls, and the plane broke up in mid-air over San Miguel El Alto, Michoacán. There were no survivors.
