African Tea Traditions Event Series: Ataya Senegalese Tea Ceremony and Moroccan Mint Tea
Our first presenter, Hame Watt, will introduce the Ataya Senegalese Tea Ceremony and demonstrate how to prepare and serve the tea which is made with gunpowder green tea, sugar, and mint. He will provide information on the history of tea and share his experience of tea from different countries. Our second presenter will be Tyler Williams from Art of Tea. He will offer background information on Moroccan Mint Tea. PRESENTER BIO: Hamé Watt is originally from Senegal, now living in Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA. Retired former Director of the DC Water Research Center and Professor and Researcher in the field of Water Resources. His other experiences include: Senior research at the Planning Research Corporation, under NASA contract with the US Dep of Energy, Research affiliate to the US Geological Survey, Member of the advisory council of EOLSS- UNESCO, former member of the National Academies Water Science & Technology Board, former member of the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, current member of a West-African Climate Change Commission, International Water and Energy consulting, and Board Chairman of Distance Education Africa. He has published widely in the field of Water and Solar. In his younger years, Hame’ was an experienced tea preparer for the family in Senegal. He learned more about tea cultures when he went to China, India and Morocco in the 1990’s. Hame’ is a certified Tai Chi Instructor. During the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, he has been giving online Tai Chi class through Zoom.
