MARIA PAKHOMENKO was the first performer of many songs that later became associated with other artists. In Soviet pop music, this was common practice: a song lived independently of the performer, moving from voice to voice, acquiring a new mood and a new era. And this, perhaps, speaks to the power of the song itself. If a piece is good, it withstands different interpretations. One performer emphasizes the lyricism, another the drama, a third the energy. And the listener chooses which version is closer to them. Today, the word "cover" is perceived as something modern, but in essence, musical culture has always worked this way. Many famous hits of the past also had their "first life" in one performance, only to achieve true popularity in another. Pakhomenko, however, had a very recognizable style—soft, intelligent, without unnecessary theatrics. Therefore, when listening to early recordings, you sometimes even wonder: "So she was the first."
