Kurnool district is facing a severe drinking water shortage due to depleting water reserves in the Tungabhadra reservoir, further worsened by the El Niño effect. A total of 26 water storage tanks across the Adoni, Emmiganur, Mantralayam, and Aluru constituencies depend on the Tungabhadra Lower Canal for their supply, which in turn provides drinking water to approximately 229 villages after purification. Although water was supposed to be released into these tanks in April, current storage levels stand at only 20 to 35 percent capacity, causing drinking water supply to already be cut off in many villages. Engineers have officially announced that no further water supply will be available through the Tungabhadra Lower Canal, raising serious concerns among residents.
