South Willow Lake - Utah's Best Backpacking Spot

After hiking all throughout the Wasatch and Uintas, we didn’t expect our new favorite backpacking spot to be in the Stansbury Mountains!! 🪻 With expansive wildflower-filled meadows, jagged snowcapped peaks, and birds-eye valley views that start just a mile into the hike, you’ll forget the weight you’re carrying as you wander in awe through these heavenly surroundings 🥾 HIKE DETAILS “South Willow Lake via Stansbury Crest Trail” on AllTrails 7.5 miles round trip 2,191 feet of elevation gain Rated hard 🏔️ LOCATION DETAILS Located in Tooele County out past the town of Grantsville, the Stansbury Mountains are known for their dramatic rise from the Great Salt Lake desert, boasting rugged peaks, diverse wildlife, and yes, one of the most BEAUTIFUL alpine lakes in all of Utah! Surrounded by desert, we did not expect these mountains to be SO lush 🚙 ~1 hour from Salt Lake City 🛻 ~1.5 hours from Provo ‼️ Dirt road to trailhead, but no high clearance required 📅 BEST TIME TO GO The best time to hike to South Willow Lake is typically mid-May through September, depending on snowfall.
