Stone Carving Tools and Techniques | How Sculptors Shape Stone

Learn the basic tools and techniques of stone carving in this demonstration from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Instructor Treden Wagoner introduces the essential tools used by stone carvers, including the hammer, point, claw or tooth chisel, flat chisel, rasp, riffler, sandpaper, and polishing materials. The demonstration shows how a sculptor moves from roughing out a form to refining the surface, removing tool marks, sanding, and polishing. This video was originally produced to accompany The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy, an exhibition at Mia featuring late 14th- and early 15th-century alabaster sculptures from the tomb of Jean sans Peur, Duke of Burgundy.
