"In the popular imagination, an innocent person in prison is someone suffering to the nth degree. For me, that's not the case, simply because my conscience is light. At night, when I go to bed, I have nothing to reproach myself for." These are the words of Alberto Stasi, who gave a television interview inside the Bollate prison, where he is serving a final 16-year sentence for the murder of Chiara Poggi. "When they ask me if I killed Chiara, I think they don't know what they're talking about," Stasi continued during the interview. "Why did I decide to speak out today? To give meaning to this experience, because certain things shouldn't happen again. If a person goes through experiences like the one I went through, it should be made public, available to everyone, and since I have the opportunity to speak out, I do so, so that people can understand, reflect, and also decide—I mean, whether the current system is good or whether something needs to change." Stasi retraced the steps of the trial that saw him acquitted twice and convicted by the Supreme Court, where the judges upheld the appeal verdict. He also delved into what he believes were the distortions, distortions, and errors that led to his conviction. The 38-year-old still maintains his innocence. The sentence for the murder was twenty-four years, but with the exclusion of aggravating circumstances and the one-third reduction afforded by the fast-track trial, it was reduced to sixteen years.
