The idea of ​​the utility of knowledge that has an essential value, entirely separate from any utilitarian purpose, is that if we let what is freely given wither away, if we renounce the generative power of what is useless, if we only listen to the deadly siren song that compels us to pursue profit, we will only be capable of forming a sick and forgetful society that, lost, will end up losing its sense of self and of life. Nuccio Ordine (Diamante, Italy, 1958) is a professor of Italian Literature at the University of Calàbria and author of various books, most of them centered on the figure of Giordano Bruno. He is the author of the conegudíssim llibre La utilitat de l’inútil, a forceful manifesto in defense of humanities. He has been a visiting professor at centers at Yale University (USA); Paris IV-Sorbonne, CESR de Tours and IEA in Paris (France), the Wartburg Institute or the Max Planck in Berlin (Germany). He is also a member of the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies and of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and with honorary membership of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
