Peter Obi: “You Can’t Inspire Change While Stealing Public Money” Interaction With London Students
Peter Obi expressed gratitude to the organizers and students for the opportunity to engage with young Nigerians and Africans abroad, describing them as ambassadors of the continent. He emphasized that Africa, particularly Nigeria, possesses enormous human and natural resources but continues to struggle because of poor leadership, lack of investment in education, healthcare, and productivity. Obi challenged students to become the “bridge” between the developed systems they experience abroad and the change needed back home, stressing that education is meaningful only when used to build society. Drawing from his experiences in leadership and global institutions, Obi argued that leadership must be rooted in competence, character, compassion, accountability, and sacrifice. He shared stories from his time as governor, highlighting fiscal discipline, integrity, and his rejection of wasteful governance practices. He maintained that Nigeria’s biggest challenge is not policy failure but leadership failure, insisting that nations develop when leaders focus on human capital, productivity, agriculture, industrialization, and the rule of law. Obi also encouraged the diaspora to remain connected to Nigeria through advocacy, civic engagement, and a commitment to good governance. He rejected the idea of “brain drain,” arguing instead that talented Nigerians abroad would return if the country becomes functional and secure. Throughout the discussion, he repeatedly stressed that sustainable change comes from ordinary people consistently doing the right thing, demanding accountability, and refusing to normalize corruption and disorder.
