Viking Chess - An Easy DIY Yard Game

Viking Chess! An easy homemade yard game that is super fun to play! Check out this video for a quick overview of the game and pieces needed. I ran across this game this summer while at a family get-together and found it addictive to play. Basically, anything where you get to throw sticks at your opponent is something I am interested in! The game is simple, you each have 5 pawns lined up across your area of the yard in front of you. The pawns are aligned with a string stretched between two stakes. In the middle, a kind piece that stands about twice as tall as the pawns. The goal - Knock down your opponents pawns using throwing sticks and then knock down the king in the middle before they do. You take turns throwing your sticks ( a piece of 1" dowel about 18" long) across the playing area trying to knock down their pawns. You get 6 throws and then the other player gets a turn at yours. It goes fairly quick once you get the hang of it enticing you for many rematches if you get beat. Once all of your pawns are down the king is fair game and once he is dead on the field you have admitted defeat. A simple game that warrants hours of backyard fun. The pieces are simple to make Ten pawns - made from 4X4 sealed with linseed oil cut into about 8-12" pieces. 1 king - a 4X4 with a few fancy cuts and about 18" tall, coated in linseed oil as well. 6 throwing sticks (ammos as my youngest calls them) - made from coat rod or railings. About a 1-2" dowel sanded and coated with linseed oil about 24" long. Also, four stakes and two pieces of colored string about 12' long are needed to mark off the pawn's front line on each side. This is one of those super easy afternoon projects that can provide hours of enjoyment for the whole family, good luck and have fun!!
