VW Air Cooled Teardown - This 40HP Engine STILL RAN… Somehow

This old VW 40 horsepower air-cooled engine was actually said to be running before teardown… but once I got inside, the problems just kept stacking up. One piston was running dry and starting to scuff the cylinder wall, the bearings showed wear consistent with low oil pressure, and it still had the old 17mm oil pump setup that many VW guys considered bad news for these little engines. Then I found massive .060 barrel shims that dropped the compression ratio down around 6.2–6.4:1, which explains why this thing probably had almost no power. But one of the wildest finds was a pushrod that had effectively become shorter over time because the pushrod ends had literally pounded themselves deeper into the rod.
