Small Mammal Recovery and River Restoration on Hackney Marshes
A film documenting our efforts over the last three years to bring small mammals back to Hackney Marshes and restore and improve biodiversity in and along the old River Lea. The Old Lea and Marshes Restoration Project was led by Wildlife Gardeners of Haggerston, supported and funded by the Mayor of London Groundwork London, Hackney Council and the Rewild London Fund, The London Wildlife Trust, The Environment Agency, Wild Trout Trust, Save Lea Marshes and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. None of this would have possible without the support of the hundreds of volunteers who have and continue to help our work on the marshes. 00:00 Logos 00:18 Title & Intro 00:43 Species lost - Birds Amphibians Lizards 01:04 Species lost - Rabbits Small & mammals 01:50 Wood Mice 02:06 Why Wood Mice numbers crashed 02:37 Impact of Dogs and Cats on Wildlife 02:44 Hackney Beach 03:05 Loss of Mice 03:39 Impact of the loss of mice 04:14 Emergency action starts - Log Piles 04:41 All hands on deck 05:09 Gideon - WGH Funding 05:22 Gideon - Old River Lea Restoration 06:04 Nina Old River Lea Restoration 06:15 Gideon - River Complexity 06:50 Gideon - Work on the banks 07:00 Loggeries over 3 years 07:15 Gideon - final year Russell intro 07:30 Russell - Coppicing 08:12 Russell - Woodland Habitat 08:30 Nina - Coppicing Workshops 08:41 Russell North Marsh Habitats Project 09:18 Meadow Habitat potential reintroductions 09:35 Short-tailed vole 10:02 Short-tailed voles return 10:19 Common Shrew increase 10:30 We need a mammal survey 10:44 Small mammal - Alison 11:00 Alison - Survey Sites 11:38 Alison - Traps and Numbers 11:57 First Short-tailed Vole in over 20 Years 12:01 Alison - Longworth Trap 12:11 Alison - Sherman Trap 12:43 Alison - Shrew data 12:51 Gideon - Small Mammal survey 13:00 Ian - Wood mouse in trap 13:11 Alison - Results 13:29 Ian - Wood mouse release 13:33 Alison - Interesting Vole observations 13:48 Alison - We need to increase habitat 14:13 Gideon - Food chain 14:22 Russell - Results 14:35 Russell - Grassland management 15:05 Grassland management Vole Shrew Relocation 16:11 Kestrel takes a Vole 16;37 Small mammal relocation 16:54 Final thoughts 17:33 End Credits
