A monastery burned down because of a single book. 1327, a Benedictine monastery in northern Italy. Franciscan friar William and young novice Adso are tasked by Abbot Abo to investigate the death of friar Adelmo. The death initially appeared to be an accident. However, a second body is discovered, with black stains remaining on the tongue and fingers. All clues point to a labyrinthine library where access by outsiders is restricted. Hidden there was the lost book, Volume 2 of Aristotle's *Poetics*, presumed to have dealt with comedy and laughter. To the old friar Jorge, laughter was not merely a pleasure. It was a force that weakened fear, made authority appear unfamiliar, and shook seemingly solid order. Therefore, instead of destroying the book, he hid it, and whenever someone approached it, he inflicted death using a poisoned page. William draws closer to the truth, but uncovering it does not mean everything is saved. The lamp clutched by Jorge burns down the library and the monastery, turning countless books and memories into ashes. The Name of the Rose is not merely a medieval monastery mystery novel. This work asks us: Why did certain books have to be hidden? Why was certain knowledge considered dangerous enough to kill? Why did laughter become a threat to religious authority and political power?
