The course content is reviewed and approved by the Canadian Firearms Program (CFPP) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is designed to meet the mandatory requirements of section 7 of the Firearms Act. To be eligible to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), participation in the CCSMAF classroom course is mandatory for all first-time applicants. After completing the course, candidates must pass the examinations. The following topics are covered in the CCSMAF: the evolution of firearms, their main components, types, and mechanisms; basic practices in the safe handling of firearms; ammunition; the operation of firearm mechanisms; safe handling and transportation procedures; shooting techniques and methods; care of non-restricted firearms; the responsibilities of firearm owners and users; safe storage, display, transportation, and handling of non-restricted firearms.
