When one recalls the attempt by the conservative right at the beginning of the Weimar Republic to seize control with the Freikorps, the Kapp Putsch immediately comes to mind. It took place on March 13, 1920, and failed after four days for various reasons. The rebels relied on elements of the Guard Cavalry Rifle Corps, which at the time consisted of three divisions, primarily the Ehrhardt Brigade under the command of Lieutenant Commander Hermann Ehrhardt. Relatively unknown, however, is the coup attempt undertaken by Pabst eight months earlier. On July 21, 1919, the first general staff officer of the Guard Cavalry Rifle Corps ordered the regiments to march on Berlin and Weimar, attempting to carry out a military coup on his own initiative.
