Vast expanses, sparse vegetation, snow, ice, rocks, and two people. The idea for a hike along the Kurai Ridge arose in June 2022, when Dasha and I were walking across the Kurai steppe toward mountains shrouded in clouds. These were the final days of our trek through the iconic sites of the North Chuisky Ridge, "a must-see for everyone." I mentioned then that we would definitely climb the mountains visible on the horizon. Exactly one year had passed, and we were climbing through the snow toward the pass, driven by gusts of wind and bad weather following in our footsteps. Preparing for this hike was one of the most labor-intensive. There was very little information about this region of Altai. Many decisions in planning the route were based on an analysis of topographic maps, satellite images, and our own experience. The hike turned out to be very challenging. Spring 2023 arrived late, and this was especially noticeable in the mountains: streams on the slopes, ice on the rivers, ice on the lakes, snow on the passes, and low temperatures. At the end of the second day, we were caught in rain with strong gusts of wind. I fell ill first, and a few days later, Dasha followed suit. We never recovered by the end of the hike. This hike was especially harsh and difficult for Dasha. We didn't meet a single tourist during the entire trip. The route is 170 km long, with 13 passes: 7 N/K, 3 1A, and 3 1B. Two summits (1B?).
