Nazareth. A village of three hundred inhabitants in the hills of Galilee, so insignificant that its name appears in no ancient text outside the Gospels—and yet it is there that God chose to spend the first thirty years of his human life. This documentary recreates daily life in Nazareth in the first century: the semi-troglodytic houses carved into the limestone, Joseph's tekton workshop, the Sabbath synagogue, the olive groves, the millstones turning before dawn. But above all, it explores the question this village poses to every believer: why the darkness? Why Nazareth and not Jerusalem? Why spend nine-tenths of a life in a place from which one's own contemporaries said nothing good ever came? The answer, rooted in the prophecy of Isaiah and the Greek of the prologue to John, is one of the most radical in all of Christian theology.
