Why Chettinad should be your next travel destination | A journey through the spectacular mansions

Who hasn't heard about the Chettinad mansions? But did you know the story behind how these mansions were constructed? The Chettinad mansions are lavish homes numbering over 10000, built by Nattukottai Chettiar community in the Chettinad region of South India Built between 1850 and the start of World War II, these mansions were constructed to signify the Chettiar community's wealth as merchants trading precious stones and serving as bankers in Southeast Asia These mansions combine European architectural styles with traditional Tamil architecture, featuring elements like intricately designed tiled and marble floors, stained glass, open courtyards, and intricately carved wooden doors. Materials such as teak wood from Burma, marble from Italy, and tiles from Japan, Germany, France and stained glass from Belgium were used. These homes were designed for large, joint families, sometimes housing 70-80 residents, and often included more than 50 rooms and multiple courtyards. The opulent wooden architecture of the Thinnai served as a reception and business area, decorated elaborately to create lasting first impressions. The walls of the Chettinad mansion were made using a limestone mix and eggshells, which is why the area is called Karaikudi.
