The $15 Pen and the $200 Pen That Solve the Same Problem

Sometimes the most interesting fountain pen comparisons aren’t the obvious ones. Last week I picked up two pens on a whim: the Pilot Kakuno and the Lamy 2000. One costs about $15. The other is closer to $200. On paper they live in completely different parts of the fountain pen world. But the more I thought about it, the more I started to notice something interesting: both pens are trying to solve the same design problem — how to make writing feel effortless. In this video I look at the design philosophy behind these two pens, how German and Japanese writing traditions influenced fountain pen development, and why beginner pens and iconic designs sometimes end up chasing the same goal. Along the way we’ll also look at where these pens sit in their respective lineups, with a quick appearance from the Lamy Al-Star and Pilot Custom 823. Sometimes a $15 pen and a $200 pen have more in common than you’d expect. Thanks for watching and welcome to Urban Inkspot.
