Nearly a century ago Otto Warburg emphasized that, though typically an anaerobic activity, cancer primarily and uniquely used glycolysis to fuel itself even in the presence of oxygen. This is known as aerobic glycolysis and now the "Warburg effect”. He maintained that cancer must do so because of mitochondrial damage and insisted that was the cause of cancer. His theory was soon mostly forgotten amidst the excitement over genetic discoveries and particularly oncogenes half a century ago, as the genetic mutational cause of cancer became the paradigm in the "war on cancer" to the present day. Millions of dollars, and far more importantly millions of lives were lost as research barked up this wrong tree. However, as the genetic mutational theory of cancer is now being rightfully challenged, Warburg's 'cancer as a metabolic mitochondrial disease' theory is being resurrected by current proponents. I will show that once more the wrong suspect is being found guilty as untold lives are again at stake.
