Its success was so great that the game ended up reaching multiple platforms, to the point that it was difficult to find a console of the time that didn't have some version of Resident Evil. However, the franchise's path on handheld consoles was far from easy. From the early years, Capcom showed interest in bringing its games to this market. One of the most well-known attempts was the Resident Evil port for Game Boy Color, developed by the British studio Jot Gen. However, the results failed to convince Shinji Mikami, who ordered the project's cancellation despite its public announcement and advanced stage of development. Later, an adaptation of Resident Evil 2 for the newly released Game Boy Advance was announced. But this time, the problems were even greater. Due to the console's technical limitations and the difficulties encountered during development, the team barely made it past the first few minutes of the game before the project was canceled. Despite these setbacks, Capcom didn't give up. Unexpectedly, they released Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color, though the result proved highly divisive among fans and fell far short of the impact of the main installments, receiving heavy criticism for the drastic changes that distanced the title from the original essence. It seemed that Resident Evil had no place in the world of handheld consoles.
