Zorro is a police dog who, along with his handler, Chiara Barone, a select officer of the State Police, keeps watch for dangers on the streets of Naples. A general prevention and public order dog for the State Police, like Zorro, he operates in urban environments, where he performs a daily prevention service. This work is always undertaken with pleasure by the dog, as it is part of his nature and motivation in life. Chiara became a dog handler by entering an internal competition and met Zorro during the selection process. Together, they undertook a multi-step process, in which their affinity with the dog played a key role. Training for police dogs begins around the age of one and teaches them to face risky situations without hesitation. But what does it mean to be a police dog? Police dogs are deployed at checkpoints, where a patrol car and a patrol of motorcycle police are also present. When a car is stopped, if the documents check reveals that the driver has a criminal record, the dog is alerted to a potential threat. The passengers are then made to disembark for a search. If one of them isn't cooperative and tries to escape, the police dog springs into action, chasing it and attempting to restrain it by grabbing its limbs. The dog is then rewarded for its excellent work. Many wonder if police dogs are drugged, but the answer is obviously no: they are taught to work through play. The dogs come from working dog breeders and are selected by State Police instructors at around 7-8 months old. Zorro is also capable of bringing a smile to anyone in need, like when he let a child pet him during remote learning, a gesture immortalized in a photo that went viral on social media. A true symbiosis has developed between Chiara and Zorro, because they are not only teammates, but also spend time together outside of work.
