Priced Out, Scared Off, In Danger: The Truth About the Birth Rate Crisis

There has been some confusion on why the Birth Rate is falling... apparently We're "selfish." We "prioritize careers." We're "anti-family" and Candy Crush I went and read the actual studies. Spoiler: it's not us. In this video, I break down the three things actually driving the birth rate decline in the U.S. and Canada. Using data from Harvard, Pew Research, Statistics Canada, the USDA, ProPublica, and the Gender Equity Policy Institute. THE THREE THINGS NO ONE BLAMING WOMEN WANTS TO TALK ABOUT: 1. We've been priced out. Housing costs alone account for HALF of America's fertility decline. Canada just hit a record-low 1.25 fertility rate. It costs over $310,000 to raise a single child to age 18 in the U.S. Wages haven't moved. 2. The political climate is killing women... literally. Texas maternal mortality rose 56% after the state's abortion ban. Women in ban states are 2x more likely to die during pregnancy. Amber Thurman. Candi Miller. Josseli Barnica. Nevaeh Crain. Porsha Ngumezi. Say their names. 3. Pregnancy is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do. Homicide is a leading cause of death for pregnant women in the U.S. — more common than hemorrhage or sepsis. 40% of those killings are by intimate partners. Canada saw 187 femicides in 2024. We're not opting out of children. We're opting out of a country that made having one a math problem, a political risk, and a physical danger — all at once. ⌁ TIMESTAMPS [00:00]:[01:36] - Intro [01:37]:[03:47] - Social Media + News Outlets input [04:36]:[09:38] — Argument 1: The Cost [0:9:39]:[12:28] — Argument 2: The State of the World [12:29]:[15:09] — Argument 3: The Violence Against Women [15:10]:[16:13] — Final thoughts ⌁ SOURCES (linked in full at jordanlynn.ca) Pew Research Center — Why U.S. Adults Don't Have Kids (2024) NBC News / Gender Equity Policy Institute — Texas pregnancy deaths rose 56% after abortion ban ProPublica — Life of the Mother investigative series Statistics Canada — Trends in police-reported IPV, 2024 Harvard T.H.
