On March 31,1995 the world lost one of their brightest young stars! Selena Quintanilla-Perez was shot & killed at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi by the former president of her fan club Yolanda Saldívar! Selena was shot in the back & she ran to the lobby of the motel where she named Yolanda as her shooter before she passed out on the floor of the lobby! Selena was pronouced dead at 1:05 pm! Selena died from blood loss! She was only 23 years old when she died & she was 2 weeks aways from her 24th birthday! On April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared her birthday "Selena Day" in Texas. Selena was in the middle of recording her first english album at the time of her tragic murder! Sadly, Selena only got to record 4 songs for that ablum! That album was released on July 18,1995 & it was called Dreaming of You! That album debut at #1 on U.S. Billboard 200 chart, it sold more than 330,000 units in its first week, making her the first Latin singer to accomplish this feat, and Dreaming of You the second highest debut after Michael Jackson's HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. Dreaming of You has proven commercially successful, selling over 2,000,000 copies in its first year! Dreaming of You was among the "top ten best-selling debuts of all time" along with being the "best-selling debuts for a female artist", selling 175,000 copies on the very first day. In July 1995, Dreaming of You joined five of Selena's studio albums that remained on the top ten of Billboard Top 50 Latin Albums. Dreaming of You also became the highest ranking Spanish language album to chart Billboard Top Latin Albums. She was called "The Queen of Tejano music" and the Mexican equivalent of Madonna. In June 2006, Selena was commemorated with a museum and a bronze life-sized statue (Mirador de la Flor in Corpus Christi, Texas), which are visited by hundreds of fans each week! She has sold over 21 million albums worldwide! Selena will be missed & mourned for many more years to come! Her memory lives through her family,friends,fans & music! RIP Selena Quintanilla-Perez!
