30. Partir en vacances pendant l’agreg?.mp3
🎙️ Can you take a vacation during your agrégation exam year? Many candidates ask themselves this question: Is it reasonable to go on vacation when preparing for the agrégation? The short answer: it depends. In this episode, recorded in the mountains during a week of skiing, I share my experience and observations after working with numerous candidates. The main idea: disconnecting isn't a luxury—it's a strategic tool. But you still need to know when, how, and why to rest so that these moments become a real performance booster… and not a source of guilt. On the agenda for this episode: Can you really take a vacation during your agrégation exam year? Yes… but not just any way. It all depends on what you call a "vacation": • A weekend: ✔️ No problem • A week: ✔️ Possible if planned • Three weeks of total disconnection: ⚠️ Generally too long The key isn't the duration, but the intention and the organization. Why disconnecting is essential Preparing for the competitive teaching exam is a constant mental strain: • Memorizing • Analyzing • Producing • Writing • Continuously thinking This mental load eventually creates intense cognitive fatigue. Without rest, the brain eventually becomes overloaded. A real break allows you to: • Release mental pressure • Reduce cognitive fatigue • Return more clear-headed and more effective • Approach the exams with greater serenity The importance of mindfulness activities Not all breaks are created equal. The most effective activities are those that engage the body and focus attention, for example: • skiing • dancing • yoga • hiking • sports These activities force the brain to concentrate on the present moment, which stops rumination. Contrary to popular belief, scrolling on your phone is not a real break. The Weight Training Metaphor The brain functions like a muscle. In weight training: 1. Muscle fibers are worked 2. Fatigue is created 3. The body is allowed to recover 4. The fibers rebuild themselves stronger With the brain, it's exactly the same. Progress occurs during recovery. Without rest, you don't progress: you become exhausted. Beware of False Breaks Some activities give the impression of rest but continue to consume attention. A typical example: social media. Algorithms are designed to capture your attention and keep you there as long as possible. A simple strategy could be: • Temporarily delete certain apps • Limit their access during the week • Perhaps reserve them for the weekend When preparing for the competitive exam, attention is a precious resource. The Guilt-Inducing Vacation Trap The real problem isn't taking a vacation. The problem is leaving without planning. Result: • You feel guilty • You think you "should be working" • You don't really rest The solution is simple: schedule your break in your calendar. If your calendar says you're not working, then you shouldn't be working. The guilt disappears. The Key Role of Planning To successfully disconnect: • Anticipate work before your break • Know what will be done afterward • Clearly plan your rest period Disconnecting then becomes a conscious choice, not an escape. Strategic Times to Slow Down Certain periods are particularly conducive to recovery. For example: • The weekend before the written exams • A week of deceleration before the oral exams • One or two weeks during the summer The idea is to work intensely beforehand, then slow down to recover. A Key Skill for Candidates for the Agrégation (competitive teaching exam) If your schedule doesn't fit into your days, the solution isn't to eliminate breaks. The solution is often to eliminate certain tasks. Choosing, prioritizing, and quickly deciding what is essential: This is one of the most important skills for succeeding in the Agrégation. Remember Recovery is not a luxury. It's a strategic skill. Candidates who persevere are those who know how to: • work intensely • but also when to stop With good planning, it's entirely possible to take a vacation during the year of the competitive teaching exam—and even turn it into a performance boost. ⭐ The key: plan ahead so you can truly disconnect. ...
