Stefani married Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale wearing a Christian Dior wedding gown in September. The autumn winter 2003-4 collection from Dior was Paris Fashion Week's first major show, and filled the catwalk with bright, second skin rubber, circus-style make up, and massively high heels. One thing is sure: Galliano, the English maverick with kick, is a big hit. If not with a rather puzzled public, at least with TV cameras and the big boss, Bernard Arnault, head of the conglomerate that owns Dior-LVMH. He attends every show. Nobody can turn out a showgirl as Galliano can. The models minced out on their enormous platformed soles with straps up the instep and stilettos at least seven inches (18 centimeters) high. One girl in an attractive outsized white trench coat fell on the runway and could hardly hoist herself up. The models under a big top facing the Eiffel Tower flounced around in pink tops with froths of big ruffles, over bright rubber laced-up leggings. One girl was waving an ostrich-feather miniskirt under a red rubber bolero. There were some huge and soft mink jackets and coats in pastel green or parma violet, over the clinging rubber undergarments. The fur accessories inspired a group of protesters to head for the catwalk, interrupting briefly before security men escorted them out smartly. Stiffened skirts or tops came with black and white graphics in a Chinese vein, with carp fish in circles, lotus flowers, geometrics and so on. The Chinese business came directly from the haute couture collection for this summer. But these looks - although still exaggerated with the puffy-wrapped tops - were hardly on the grandiose scale of the haute couture. And a couple of evening dresses with outsized pastel floral patterns on organza or chiffon were pretty enough to think of wearing. Fashion critics are also excited about the latest Dior accessories - new red leather handbags. While much of the collection is a showcase intended for the catwalk only, these bags will be eagerly sought after in Dior stores. And while many of the biggest names in fashion are having to tighten their belts this season, Christian Dior is expected to announce profits of $36m (�24m) for 2002, this week. The house expects sales to top $1bn by 2006.
