Northern Michigan Towns! Petoskey, Charlevoix & Traverse City!

On our September 2025 trip to Northern Michigan, we explored three charming lakeside towns—Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Traverse City. And while they may seem similar at first glance —each has its own unique personality and must-see experiences. While we stayed in Petoskey at the Sun Outdoors RV Resort, all three of the towns were an easy day drive from each other. We start in Petoskey’s Gaslight District, wandering through shops, waterfront views, and even searching for the famous Petoskey stones. Dinner at the Backlot and walk along the jetty finished off our day. From there, we headed south to Charlevoix for a day where we explore downtown, catch the drawbridge in action, and visit the whimsical mushroom houses designed by Earl Young. We used a self guided walking tour from Mushroom House Tours to help us learn about each house as we walked. Our third day was spent in Traverse City, which was the largest of the three downtowns we visited. We started our morning by grabbing a quick bite at the Chubby Unicorn (Troy found a new breakfast burrito and it made the top of his favorites!). We then dived into a livelier downtown scene and made a dog friendly stop into Cherry Republic to do some sampling before heading out to the Old Mission Peninsula. The peninsula is home to a variety of wineries and we made a couple of stops to enjoy some Michigan whites and take in the scenic views. We wrap up our day at the Old Mission Lighthouse and walking along the shoreline—searching for stones and soaking in everything that makes this part of Michigan so special.
