Treadway's Jackman Tube

This one's a winner from local Skagit River steelhead guide and friend Jordan Treadway. Like me, Jordan's a big proponent of tube flies for winter steelhead. The benefits range widely. They're light and easy to cast, they allow for easy hook changes on the water and the staggering variety of available tube fly components from discs to cones to body weights from companies like Aqua Flies makes them easy to customize to suit your fancy. Over the years I've come to love the Hoh Bo Spey, Fish Taco and Prom Dress flies. They're reasonably easy to tie, durable, attractive, swim nicely and above all else, account for a lot of fish for a lot of people. I know Jordan drew inspiration from these proven patterns in designing the Jackman and often jokes that if the aforementioned patterns had a baby, this would be the result. As with most of the patterns I do, I like to try and put my own spin on things. I really like the addition of the Micro Voodoo Fiber accents and some contrasting lateral scale mixed into the flash scheme. This fly really lights up and moves like crazy in the water. I mostly tie the Jackman with an Aqua Disc and rely on the sink tip to get the fly down, but these fish well in deeper, faster flows with an Aqua Conehead as well. Experiment with colors and materials as you see fit. I prefer the traditional Extra Limp Flashabou in the back over Holographic Flashabou as it is softer and has more movement, but alternatives like Grizzly Flashabou, Polarflash, Baitfish Emulator Flash or UV Predator Wrap cut from the core are all excellent alternatives. While I use FNF UV Jelly for the prop, a dubbing ball, Cactus Chenille or anything you can create a rear bump with will help spread the forward materials and allow for maximum movement. Guinea or schlappen make a nice collar if you don't have silver pheasant on hand. It's definitely a fly you can have fun with. Let the fish choose which one they like best.
