How to Build a Story in Your Blues Solo

Most blues solos fall apart the longer they go — same lick, recycled, until you run out of things to say. That's not a notes problem. It's a story problem. In this lesson I break down a two-chorus F blues solo note by note and show you how each chorus grows out of the one before it — using repetition, target notes, and one or two voice-leading notes that play the changes for you. You'll learn three things: ① Why repeating yourself isn't lazy — it's how a solo becomes a story. ② How one or two voice-leading notes play the changes for you, so you never sound lost. ③ A full breakdown of the solo from the top of the video — so you can hear exactly how it grew instead of resetting. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎸 BLUES PRINT — closes June 30 The whole system: 12 hours of breakdowns and transcriptions that turn the blues into a structure you can tell a story through — and actually play. I grew up in South Korea with no jazz scene around me, came to this music as a complete outsider, and learned it at Berklee from my mentor, Richie Hart. I teach jazz guitar through melody — what I call the Functional Diagonal Approach. If an outsider can build a blues that keeps building instead of falling apart, it isn't talent — it's a system you can learn too. #JazzGuitar #BluesGuitar #JazzBlues #VoiceLeading #BluesSolo ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 Two-Chorus F Blues Solo (Full Demo) 0:50 Why Blues Solos Run Out of Ideas 1:27 Berklee Jazz Guitar and the Functional Diagonal Approach 2:24 The System: Repetition and Voice Leading 3:01 Three Keys to a Blues Solo That Builds 3:36 First Chorus: D Minor Blues Voicings 5:43 Why Repetition Is What Makes Music 7:37 Second Chorus: F Major Blues Targets 9:02 Dominant Function and Forward Motion 11:46 Charlie Parker and George Benson Blues Changes 12:58 Django Line: Voice Leading into G Minor 14:58 Bebop Turnaround (I-VI-II-V) on the Blues 16:24 Wes Montgomery Descending Line on Bb7 17:08 Blues Print: A Blues Solo That Never Runs Out
