Álvaro García Linera en la UNGS

Former Bolivian Vice President Álvaro García Linera visited our University for the presentation of issue number 13 of the journal Wirapuru. Together with Dr. María Pía López and Dr. Martín Cortés, he discussed the current political situation in Latin America and the challenges facing the region, focusing on the relationship between Marxism and nationhood—a central theme in much of Latin American thought. Linera analyzed the rise of protectionist statism linked to an exclusionary nationalism, which resorts to tariffs and closed borders to strengthen US interests. He also reflected on how these forms of nationalism find expression in Latin America through governments that perpetuate vassalage relationships and a kind of late-stage neoliberalism, with little regard for the sovereignty of territories and peoples. The conversation raises a key question: can Latin American thought offer tools for imagining another form of popular nationalism, capable of confronting the xenophobic and protectionist nationalism of the major powers? A lucid and undeniably relevant reflection from one of Latin America's leading intellectuals and political figures.
