The Vintage Sound of Mediterranean Jazz “Paradise Sound” preserves the earliest known recordings by Blacks In Suits, captured during the summer season of 1961 along the French Riviera. Centered around the enduring partnership of trombonist Hendry Wearnson and tenor saxophonist Willie Renford, the group spent much of the early 1960s moving between hotel lounges, seaside terraces, festival audiences and late-night jazz clubs stretching from Nice to Juan-les-Pins. Recorded during a period when the Côte d’Azur had become one of Europe’s most vibrant summer jazz destinations, these sessions blend modal hard bop, soul-jazz grooves, cinematic ensemble writing and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Walking bass lines, warm piano accompaniment and extended horn conversations unfold with an openness rarely found in contemporary American studio recordings. Though rooted firmly in the language of early-1960s jazz, the recordings already reveal a strong sense of place: sea air, outdoor performances, long summer evenings and musicians adapting their sound to the rhythm of coastal life. Years later, copies of these recordings would circulate among collectors and musicians connected to the Balearic Islands, where some listeners began identifying traces of a distinctly Mediterranean approach to jazz.
