Adding images to LaTeX in 5 easy steps! | Figures for beginners | STEM skills with Dr. Sally
Are you a beginner to LaTeX but need to add images to your document? Luckily, you can learn to do it in 5 minutes with these 5 easy steps! In this video, you will learn how to easily put figures and graphics into your thesis, paper or dissertation, as well as how to control the size and positioning. As a bonus, we'll also learn how to create a list of figures at the start of your thesis, how to include short captions for that list, and how to insert images in two column mode! Phew, that's a lot in under 10 minutes! But don't worry if you can't keep up with the video, you can find the final code on my website. You'll also find a whole bunch of free guides on writing for STEM students: https://soswriting.co.uk/latex-for-sc... SUPPORT MY WORK I'm sorry for the obnoxious ads at the start of my videos. I don't want them, you don't want them, Google is placing them outside of my control. If I can get to 1k subs I can turn the ads off on these tutorial videos. In the meantime, I recommend using an ad blocker browser extension if you don't want to see them. If you enjoy my content and want to help support the channel, please feel free to like, subscribe, and comment. These things help massively in the algorithm. Then share the video with your friends and get them to subscribe too! If you'd like to contribute the cost of a coffee (or tea), that's very welcome too! The first £50 I make will be going towards upgrading my microphone set up (and getting a pop filter) so I can make better videos :) https://ko-fi.com/dr_sally TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Introduction 0:25 Step 1: Calling the "graphicx" package 0:55 Step 2: Uploading an image to Overleaf 1:25 Step 3: The figure environment and how to use it... 1:51 ...The "centering" command 2:07 ...The "includegraphics" command 2:31 ...The "caption" command 2:44 ...The "label" command 3:51 Step 4: Controlling the size of your image 5:19 Step 5: Positioning the image (a.k.a. bullying the compiler) 7:35 bonus tip Creating a list of figures 7:53 bonus tip Adding short captions for the list of figures 8:27 bonus tip Figures in two-column mode OVERLEAF LINKS https://overleaf.com CTAN (Comprehensive TeX Archive Network) LINKS https://ctan.org/pkg/graphicx CREDITS All still images and videos are used under license and were obtained from pexels: https://www.pexels.com/ Audio recording and cleanup was done in Audacity: https://www.audacityteam.org/ Screen capture was done using OBS Studio: https://obsproject.com/ Video production was done using Canva...: https://www.canva.com/join/wkp-vqw-xfp (using this referral link to sign up to Canva will get you a free premium thingy) ...and kdenlive: https://kdenlive.org/en/ All music is used under license and belongs to Kevin MacLeod.
