The Whitley Family Reminisces (Pt. 3 of 5)

Part 3 of a documentary produced by NEON Records of KY featuring members of Keith Whitley's family, his mom Faye, his sister Mary, and his brother Dwight. The interviews were conducted at the old Whitley homeplace along state highways 7/32 in Sandy Hook, KY, which has since been torn down to make way for a new highway through Sandy Hook. I have only been inside the house once, unfortunately, on Labor Day 2003. Part 3 reveals a secret that Faye told me back in April 1991 and swore me to secrecy, the 1944 Martin Herringbone guitar that belonged to the late Lester Flatt that he gave to Keith in 1974, which he in turn gave to his mother to keep for him. I added rare photos of Keith using this valuable guitar in publicity photos, concerts, and videos. Dwight discusses Keith's relationship of Lester and Keith does his famous Lester Flatt imitation. This clip also covers the success of Keith's 2nd album for RCA and how Keith talked RCA into letting him scrap his 3rd album and start over again with a new co-producer, which became the "Don't Close Your Eyes" album. Mary talks about the close relationship she enjoyed with her baby brother. Faye, Mary, & Dwight discusses Keith's school days (I included Keith's sophomore and junior mug shots) and his involvement in sports, and Dwight finishes out with a story Faye never heard before.
