Undoubtedly of Etruscan origin, it was succeeded first by the Romans and then by the Lombards. Since the 9th century. B.C. the political life of this town was closely linked to Sovana, the main seat of the Aldobrandeschi family. Subsequently, with the inexorable decline that Sovana was experiencing, the importance of Pitigliano became ever greater and in 1293, with the marriage between Romano Orsini and Anastasia, daughter of Margherita Aldobrandeschi and Guido di Montfort, the county seat was transferred from Sovana to Pitigliano. On the death of the most illustrious member of the Orsini family, Pope Nicholas III, the entire county was troubled by internal conflicts and by the assaults of the Sienese republic. On May 26, 1546 Pitigliano was the scene of a duel that caused a great uproar at the time of the events...... the two well-known captains Giovanni Taddei, a Florentine noble and Ascanio Della Corgna, lord of Castiglione del Lago, challenged each other; for the.....................................
