In Part 1, we dismantled the heroic image of the bandeirantes and saw what the myth hid: indigenous capture, attacked villages, destroyed missions, and the word "exploration" becoming quite suspect. Now, in Part 2, Laís follows the trail of the map. Because the bandeirantes didn't just enter the interior. They helped push Portuguese occupation into regions that, according to the Treaty of Tordesillas, shouldn't even belong to Portugal. In this video, we'll talk about: The Treaty of Tordesillas, The Treaty of Madrid, Minas Gerais and gold, Ouro Preto, Mariana, and Sabará, Goiás and Anhanguera, City of Goiás / Vila Boa, Meia Ponte, now Pirenópolis, Indigenous peoples in Goiás, river expeditions to Mato Grosso, river routes, and how the map of Brazil grew over villages, rivers, mountains, farms, memories, and lives that the heroic version preferred to leave out of the frame. And yes: Pirenópolis is part of this story. Because Meia Ponte, my hometown, was born beautiful, but it was also born in the wake of gold, exploitation, and pressure on indigenous territories.
