Matlala offered plea deal

The NPA says its proposed plea agreement with alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala is about pursuing those higher up the chain. Matlala appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria, where he entered into a plea bargain with the State. Under the deal, the alleged tender tycoon will become a state witness and testify against those implicated in the controversial Medicare24 R228 million contract, in exchange for a reduced sentence. The court has reserved judgment on whether to accept the agreement, with the matter postponed to 1 July for judgment and possible sentencing. Newzroom Afrika's Veronica Makhoali has more.
